Oak wilt in Niagara

Oak wilt, a fungal disease that kills oak trees, was confirmed in Niagara Falls in 2023 — the first case in Canada — and has since been found in Niagara-on-the-Lake. It gets into trees through fresh cuts.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency's advice is not to prune oaks between April and November. If there's an oak on your property, it gets trimmed outside that window.

Before anyone trims

Branches near power lines aren't a job for a trimming crew. Call your electrical utility first.

Trees on the boulevard — the strip between the sidewalk and the road — usually belong to the municipality. Ask the city before anyone trims them.

Tree & hedge trimming, tree removal: common questions

When is the best time to trim trees?

For most trees, late winter, while they're dormant and the branches are easy to see. Oaks shouldn't be pruned between April and November because of oak wilt. Dead or hanging branches shouldn't wait — they come down whenever they're found.

Do you remove trees?

Yes. Send a photo with your quote request and you'll get a straight answer on yours — what it takes, and what it costs.

When should hedges be trimmed?

Most hedges get their main trim in late spring or early summer, once the new growth is in, and a tidy-up later in the season. Heavy cutting is best left until the plant is dormant.

Can you trim my neighbour's branches that hang over my yard?

Generally, branches over your side can be cut back to the property line, as long as the tree isn't harmed. The tree is still your neighbour's, so it's worth talking to them first.

Which areas do you cover?

St. Catharines (every part of the city), Niagara Falls (Mount Carmel, Chippawa and the Garner Road area), Thorold (Central Thorold, Confederation Heights, Rolling Meadows and Beaverdams), Fonthill, Niagara-on-the-Lake (Old Town, Virgil, Queenston, St. Davids and Glendale) and Welland. Close by and not sure? Ask — it's a quick answer.
