Snow removal in St. Catharines — Merritton, Western Hill, the Haig and Glenridge.

Driveways, walkways and steps for homes, and common elements for condo and townhome corporations, on routes through Merritton, Western Hill, the Haig and Glenridge. Residential only.

The City plows residential streets last — once 8 cm is down and the priority, main and secondary roads are done — and then the plow leaves its windrow across your driveway. That ridge, your walkways and, under the city's by-law, your sidewalk are all yours to clear. A contract puts every one of them in writing before the first snowfall.

The 24-hour sidewalk rule

St. Catharines By-law 2008-315 makes owners responsible for the full width of the sidewalk along the front, side and rear of their property, cleared to bare pavement within 24 hours of snow or ice. The fine is per metre left, after a 12-hour notice. If you want the city sidewalk in your contract, say so on the quote and it's written into the scope.

Merritton and the parking bans

St. Catharines doesn't run a standing overnight ban; it declares one when a storm needs it, and asks residents to plan for 72 hours off the street. Parts of Merritton are exempt — which means cars can stay on some Merritton streets while the plow works around them. Tell us if yours is one, so the route plans for it.

Up the hill in Glenridge

Brock University moved up the hill to its campus in Glenridge in 1966, and Glenridge is the one part of the snow route that sits on top of the escarpment. Merritton, by contrast, grew up below it, where the old Welland Canal climbed the slope. Give us the street when you ask for a quote; it decides which part of the route you're on.

Snow removal in St. Catharines: questions

Does the City help seniors with their sidewalks?

St. Catharines runs a free sidewalk-clearing program for seniors and residents with disabilities. Applications close the last Friday of November and the waitlist has run past 650 people, so a private contract is the fallback if a spot doesn't open up.

Does the City of St. Catharines clear my windrow?

No. The City doesn't clear driveways, private walkways or the windrow its plow leaves at the end of a driveway. Whether we clear it on each visit is written into your contract.

Which parts of St. Catharines do your snow routes cover?

Merritton, Western Hill, the Haig and Glenridge near Brock University. Elsewhere in St. Catharines, send the address anyway — you'll get a straight answer on whether a route reaches you.

How much snow does St. Catharines get?

Environment Canada's 1981–2010 normals for the Niagara District Airport put it at about 137 cm a year, with January the snowiest month at around 39 cm. The number that matters for a contract is the trigger depth — the amount that starts a visit.

I'm away for part of the winter. Can the sidewalk still be done?

Yes — tick 'I'm away for part of the winter' on the quote form. The 24-hour by-law doesn't pause while you're away, so a seasonal contract covers it while you're gone.
